    2021 Tax Guide

Posted by Thomas R Fritts on Feb 2nd 2021

Every year I read it from cover to cover! (Just kidding.) Like the obsessive/compulsive character in the old TV show "Monk," I like to do my taxes right. In my imagination I am being audited and I am impressing the IRS agent with my detailed knowledge of Tax Law. I have had several IRS agents in my congregations over the years, none of them understood clergy taxes, and one gave me very bad advice that I did not follow. Over 42 years I have never actually been audited. The book also helps settle conversations with my partner -- we file a join return. One tax adviser in one of my churches (a former Episcopalian Priest) had this quote over his desk that people saw when they went to see him for tax advice. "Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take with you nothing that you have received—only what you have given: a full heart enriched by love, sacrifice and courage." —St. Francis of Assisi. I think of my friend as a use this book as a reference for tax advice.
